Jackson Administration
1829 - 1837
Jackson won both the popular vote and the Electoral vote in 1830. He took office pledging to restore the soverignty of the people, root out corruption and reign in the power of the National government.
Two crises dominated Jackson's administration. First, when Southern states tried to "nullify" the Tariff of Abominations, he stepped in to enforce. Secondly, he succesfully fought against the Second Bank of the United States, which he thought was unduly controlled by the North. The Bank was closed in 1836 and an economic panic ensued in 1837.
Jackson is also known, infamously, for his policies towards indegenous people. Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 and agressively sought to move indegenous people west of the Mississippi.
