In 1892, as part of the 250th Anniversary Celebration of the city of Gloucester, the Celebration Commitee created an Art and Loan Exhibit located inside of Gloucester High School. The Picture Catalogue contained 275 different paintings by 64 diferent artists.
While many may know Fitz Henry Lane , whose 22 paintings may have dominated the show, the many other artists also displayed may give us perhaps a nearer view of life in 1892.

Fitz Henry Lane dominated the exhibit with 22 paintings. The One I imitated , entitled "Coffins Beach at Sunset, I hope is #46 but since he has done other views from there as well I'm not quite sure.
Regardless, what Gloucester exhibition doesn't have a Lane and thus, I've begun this exhibit with mine.
Mary and Fitz were friends. So much so it is said they
would look at his paintings and her copys of his paintings to see the differences. It wasn't always easy to tell.
After both Lane and her husband passed, Mary relocated to Hartford Connecticut where the Census recorded her occupation as an artist. Mary passed away in 1886.
While I'm not that impressed with my imitation, I am imrpressed with the man Addison Center. Born in Gloucester Civil War Veteran, Addison had eight pieces featured in the exhibit. Addison was a devotee of Lane and they may have even collaborated together in some public works. I've read a story that Addison imitated Lanes painting "The Fort" and displayed it in a store window on Main Street.
Painter, Portraitist, State Representative, Veteran, Center died in 1892.

write product review Elwell has only one painting it the exhibit enititled "Magnolia Shore". My imitated work was titled, and dated "Elwell/Gloucester/1865".
Elwell went on to paint in Venice in the 1880's. I believe I heard it said that light in Venice is much like it is in Gloucester. An admirer of Lane Helen Mansfield reported that Elwell said that Lane painted the sky with Love.
